I Like Ideas More Than Things
You kinda have to when you graduate with a non-vocational degree like English. This became even more apparent traveling in South America afterwards. An Ecuadorian guy says, “so…you have a degree in your own first language?" Well, when you put it that way.
My travels there lasted two years, and my ideas found various outlets: editorials for weeklies; a non-profit launch in Buenos Aires; travel stories and guides for those seeking to escape their 9 to 5s.
Then I returned home and took one of those 9 to 5s (it was an agency, so let’s call it a 9 to 8). Because even if you like ideas more than things, you don't want no things. Plus, my mantra was suited to it. We don’t sell things. We sell ideas that sell things. And, well, when you put it that way.
The first idea I hawked was a social one for Coors Light. I was hooked. Over the next eight years, I helped BBDO San Francisco bring fresh and uncommon thinking to clients like Wells Fargo, Uncle Ben's, HP, Golden State Warriors, Cesar Canine Cuisine, Nutro dog food, Barefoot Wine and Sutter Health.
If you'd like to chat more about any of this or your clients, get in touch. I still love ideas more than things. And I’ve got a few left.
